Leon “Mike” Mecha, age 69, of 9317 Reifs Mills Road, Whitelaw, died early on Monday morning, Jan. 3, 2011, at Aurora Medical Center, Manitowoc County.
He was born on Aug. 20, 1941, in Manitowoc, son of the late William and Edith (VanHaren) Mecha.. On Sept. 17, 1983, he married Denise Wiltman at Pine Crest Historical Village, Manitowoc. Leon sailed the Great Lakes on the Joe Block as a fireman in the boiler room from 1961 until 1965. He then was employed with Wall-Rich Construction Company for many years until the time of his retirement in August of 2002.
Survivors include his wife: Denise, Whitelaw; one daughter and son-in-law: Jean and Steven Monka, Manitowoc; three sons and one daughter-in-law: Steven (Bucky) and Deane Mecha, Iron River, Mich., Whitelaw, Tyler Mecha, Whitelaw; one granddaughter: Mackenzie Mraz; one brother and sister-in-law: John and Shirley Mecha, Maribel; one sister and brother-in-law: Marie and George Emme, Whitelaw; four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law: Todd Wiltman, Manitowoc, Jeff Wiltman, Manitowoc, Greg and Sara Wiltman, Denmark, Todd and Roberta Hengel, De Pere; one sister-in-law; Wende Mraz and Jeff Thielen, Manitowoc; two fathers-in-law and one mother-in-law: Roger and Darlene Hengel, Two Rivers, Frank Wiltman, Denmark. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen with burial to follow at Branch Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will greet relative and friends at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, from 4 to 8 p.m. The visitation will continue on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing and antique tractor pulls. He especially loved assisting his nephew, Michael Emme racing his sprint car.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Dean Whillhite (sic), Dr. Edward Barylak, the entire staff of the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center, the staff of the Aurora Medical Center and all of Mike’s family and friends for their thoughts and prayer.
