Victor Hugo Thompson III was born on Nov 20, 1942 in Houston, Texas.
He graduated from Sam Houston High School, Houston, Texas, in 1960 and began his fish year in the Corp of Cadets at Texas A&M, College Station, Texas, later that year. He was part of the first fish class of Hellcat 9**. Vic was involved in Fish Drill Team (First Sergeant), Ross Volunteers and Air Force ROTC. Thompson (Class of '64) actually graduated January 1965 and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force. His MOS was a Pilot and he served in 531st Tactical Fighter Squadron, 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing, and the 7th Air Force.
He had flown for three years before starting a South Vietnam tour of duty on February 20, 1967. During his tour he flew the F-100 Super Sabre, which was a supersonic jet fighter aircraft operating as the Air Force's primary close air support jet.
On March 15 1967, Victor Thompson was shot down by enemy forces over Vietnam and did not survive the attack. He was awarded the Purple Heart, National Defense, Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Vietnam Service and Vietnam Campaign medals.
