Dutch Physicist and Scientist, Nobel Prize Physics recipient. Graduated in Physics at the University of Leiden, in 1875 he obtained his research doctorate with a thesis about the refraction of light. The Theory of Electromagnetic Waves of James Clerk Maxwell was improved thanks to his discovery of the relation existing between electricity, magnetism and light. In 1878 he was appointed Professor of the Chair of Theoretical Physics of the University of Leiden. During his long academic career he published several essays as result of his scientific research, including "The Theory of Electrons, and its applications to the phenomena of light and radiant heat", "The Einstein theory of relativity, a concise statement", and "Lectures on Theoretical Physics". In 1902, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for the study on the separation of spectral lines due to an external magnetic field, know as the Zeeman effect.
