Balthasar Ludwig Schmidt was born on July 11, 1872, in Machtlos bei Ronshausen, Germany. He was the youngest son of Dietrich and Martha Elisabeth (Lindemann) Schmidt. Balthasar moved to Bremen in about 1898, where he took up work as a tailor, eventually becoming a partner in Swarts & Breslau, a men's wardrobe company. On October 15, 1898, Balthasar married Marie Helena Paulina Durynek, daughter of the butcher Felix Durynek and Marie née Dlugosch. The Durynek family hailed from the town of Schloß-Goldmannsdorf in the Pleß district of Schlesien (now in Poland). Balthasar and Marie lived on Pelzerstraße for several years, and then on Hafenstraße. In the last couple decades of Balthasar's life, they lived at Diepenau 2/3 in Bremen. Balthasar died at his home in Bremen at the age of 72 when their house was struck during the Allied bombing raid on 19 August 1944. He was buried in the Osterholzer Friedhof cemetery. His widowed wife Marie survived and continued to live at Diepenau 2/3 in Bremen for several more years.
