Silas Hart, "Si," attended the Virginia Military Institute for one year before entering the Naval Academy. After graduation in 1950 he was an assistant navigator aboard the USS Salem. He then went to flight training at Pensacola and Corpus Christi. After training, he was assigned to flying night missions in F4U Corsairs out of Atlantic City. When returning from Key West, he was killed making an instrument approach to the Naval Air Station at Atlantic City, NJ.
