Civilian Casualty of the Great War, Robert died at sea on board RMS Leinster which was torpedoed by German submarine UB-123 in the Irish Sea.

No passenger list was produced but he definitely was not one of the R.M.S. Leinster's crew. [source: Philip Lecane

KERR - on the 10th Oct on board the Leinster. ROBERT KERR of Braemar Cottage, Ingatestone, Essex, 2nd son of Daniel & Mrs Kerr of Greenock NB * aged 35.
[* Scotland was referred to as North Britain at this time]
Second death notice in the Times from 15/10/1918 reports a funeral service at Ingatestone and interment at Fryerning.
Probate entry gives an additional address of 5 London Wall Buildings London; his widow is Mary Margaret Kerr.
Mary Margaret Kerr (nee Landon) died 08/12/1944 and was cremated at Tring Cemetery but her ashes were brought to Ingatestone and re-interred in Robert's grave 13/04/1946

Leinster was bound for Holyhead, North Wales carrying nearly 700 passengers and 77 crew-over 500 perished, including many military personnel.She was operated by the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company. The U-Boat was lost about 19th October on her return to Germany, possibly in a minefield.
