Joseph John Seymour was born August 9, 1919, in Ilion, Herkimer County, New York, the sixth child of ten children to his parents Mr. William J. Seymour and Mrs. Margaret M. (Kenefick) Seymour. Joseph grew up and was schooled in his hometown Ilion, Herkimer County, New York. He is a Class of 1937 graduate of Ilion High School. After high school, Joseph was employed by various New York State businesses including the DELCO Products Division of General Motors in Rochester, New York. Then with WWII raging, and he being a very draft-eligible aged 22 single white male, Joseph enlists as a private with the U.S. Marine Corps on February 11, 1942. Following Marine Boot Camp at Paris Island, South Carolina, Private Joseph John Seymour is assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines stationed at New River, North Carolina for additional training while awaiting further assignment. In August 1942, his company arrives in the WWII Pacific Theater to support the ongoing Solomon Islands Campaign. Private Joseph Seymour was Killed-In-Action (KIA) on November 1, 1942 fighting in the long duration Battle of Guadalcanal. His remains were taken to the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, the Philippines for internment (see Find A Grave Memorial ID 53753551), where he now rests with the personnel from all military services of the various countries engaged in WWII Pacific Theater military operations. Joseph was awarded The Purple Heart Medal. He also qualifies for at least three other personal and unit USMC awards. A cenotaph "In Memory Of" federal VA memorial headstone was requested by Joseph's family where it is installed at Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion, New York. Some favored personal object belonging to Joseph was likely placed in this empty grave by his beloved family members.
