Alton was born in Preble Township, Fillmore County, MN, the last of seven children in the Edward and Carrie (Norby) Anderson family. He attended the Tawney School, was a 1934 graduate of Mabel High School and attended Winona Business College.
Following his service in World War II, Alton married Lorraine Welper on 14 Feb 1946 in Mabel, MN. They had six children and farmed in the Mabel area until 1965 at which time they moved to Mabel. At the time of his death he was employed as a rural mail carrier in Mabel.
