He was born Burdette Gage Hall. He was the biological son of Elbert Osborn Hall and Irene A. Brockett. Sometime between 1892 and 1900 he was adopted by a childless couple, William Henry Dewell and Mary Elizabeth (Kingsley) Dewell, and took the surname Dewell.
