"Guy Wellman, Native of Friendship, Dies
Guy Wellman of Chappaqua, NY, recently retired counsel for the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey and a native of Friendship, died early Saturday morning in a New York City Hospital following an operation. He was 65 years old.
Born and reared in Friendship, Allegany county, Mr. Wellman maintained a summer home in Friendship after leaving to practice law first in Buffalo and later in NY. Mr. Wellman began his association with the Standard Oil Co. in 1915. In 1931 he became associate general counsel and in 1935 general counsel. He retired... Funeral Services were held Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the First Baptist church in Friendship with the Rev. Martz Snyder, pastor, officiating. Burial was made in Mt. Hope cemetery, Friendship. He is survived by his wife, Agnes Daniels Wellman.
Mr. Wellman, who had been on the legal staff of the Standard Oil Co. of NJ since 1915, conducted negotiations after the World War leading to formation of the Irak [sic] Petroleum Co. with American, British, Dutch, and Armenian capital. Through the group's efforts, the pipe lines connecting Irak's oil fields with Haifa, Palestine, Tripoli, Syria, on the Mediterranean were constructed.
He also negotiated his company's claims for reparations against Germany for damages to company property in the World War. He was a director of the Near East Development Corporation and United Petroleum Securities Corporation.
He attended Cook Academy, Montour Falls, NY, from 1892 until 1895. He was graduated from Yale College in 1899 and from New York Law School in 1903 when he was admitted to the NY State bar.
Mr. Wellman was with the legal department of the Pittsburgh, Shawmut & Northern Railroad from 1903 until 1909. He became a clerk in the law firm of Kenefick, Cooke, Mitchell & Bass of Buffalo in 1909 and partner in 1915."
