Soon after her birth, the family left the state of New York and moved out to Scott Co., Iowa. Her mother passed away a short time later, on 19 June 1855. The family remained in Scott Co., Iowa where her father was remarried to Isabelle Winey on 23 March 1866.
On the 1860 U. S. Census, the family is living in Hickory Grove Twp., Scott Co., Iowa. Her father supported their family by farming.
According to family records, in 1866 her father moved the family on to Clinton Co., Iowa, purchasing a tract of raw prairie just N. of Big Rock.
On the 1870 U. S. Census, we find Laura is still living in Hickory Grove Twp., Scott Co., Iowa, but now with her Uncle Ira Burch. Why? Just visiting? We don't know. Next door, however, is a John Dempster. This very likely is the "farmer named Dempster" in family stories about who her future husband, William Picklum, ended up working for sometime after arriving in the U.S. from Germany.
Laura married William Picklum on 16 October 1885 in Hayes, Crawford Co., Iowa. Sometime after marriage, they moved out to Gage Co., Nebraska, where her son, Charles, was born in Liberty on 1 August 1886.
Sadly, she passed away there in July 1888 of unknown causes.
[Note: On tombstone, died at age 33 years, 9 months, xx days. This, in combination with the family notes of her son, was used to reach the birthdate of 30 September 1854.]
