Spanish-American War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Norway, he served in the United States Navy during the War with Spain as a Sailmaker's Mate on board the "USS Nashville". He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His citation reads "Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Nelson displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action". His Medal was awarded to him on July 7, 1899.
