Ardell was born on March 29, 1919, in Comanche County, Texas, to Stokley Monroe Elliott and Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" (Irby) Elliott. He was born the ninth of their ten children, and was their last surviving child. Because of hard economic times while growing up, Ardell began working at a very young age. He labored on area farms tilling, planting, chopping weeds, picking cotton, harvesting crops, and tending livestock to help his family survive during the Great Depression. He served in the United States Army during the last months of World War II, and following his discharge from the Army, Ardell tried his hand at farming and raising livestock for a few years. Later, he went to work for the Comanche County Rural Electric Cooperative (R.E.A.) and found that he enjoyed working as a lineman on one of the construction crews. He continued to work in the electrical business until his retirement, working for Electric Service Company in San Angelo, and Stephens' Electric and Latch Oil Company in McCamey. Later, he owned and operated Elliott Electric in McCamey for several years.
Ardell married Nellie Frances Jones in Comanche County on Nov. 30, 1946, and they raised two sons together, Gary Mancel and David Ross, mainly in McCamey. Following his retirement, Ardell moved back to Comanche County and lived there for several years, until his health deteriorated. He moved back to McCamey in 2005, to be closer to his sons and grandchildren.
Ardell was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife, Frances; four brothers, William Robert Elliott, Floyd Monroe Elliott, Sherman Irby Elliott, and Merlin Efford Elliott; five sisters, Lela Pearl Shupp, Meda Jane McKee, Ada Alberta Johnston, Nellie Mae Swindle, and Lois Dorene Phillips; and a very special friend, Jo Stapp.
He is survived by two sons and their wives, Gary Elliott and his wife, Luann of McCamey and David Elliott and his wife, Julie of San Angelo; one grandson, Clifton Cody Elliott of Midland; three granddaughters, Connie Miles of McCamey, Amber Dawn Mings of Midland, and Reagan Michelle Elliott of San Angelo. He is also survived by three great-grandsons, Bradyn Ryan Medina and Cadyn Ramsey Miles of McCamey, and Hunter Elliott Mings of Midland.
