Louella Maude Brooks was born at Cogswell, Sargent County, North Dakota, on July 31, 1892. She attended public school there in the early grades before her family moved to Minnesota in March 1904. Maude went to school in upstart Richville until 1908, when the Brookses moved west to Fergus Falls. After completing high school, Maude enrolled at Park Region Luther College where she finished a year of education.

The Brooks family had returned to Richville by 1911. Maude's father, Sam, was involved in the local creamery, as was Minnesota-born Elmer C. Christenson. Born June 28, 1892, the young butter maker was a son of a Danish father and Norwegian mother. Elmer and Maude were married at Richville on June 16, 1915.

The couple's first child, Lois, was born at Richville on August 15, 1916. Shortly afterward, the family moved nearly 300 miles south to Stewartville in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Elmer quickly went to work as a butter maker at the Stewartville Co-op Creamery [photo below, shows the building circa 1938]. Maude gave birth to twins, Donna and Duane. Her babies arrived July 9, 1918. Sadly, Duane died on the 29th of August. The infant was returned to Richville and buried next to his grandparents, Sam and Debbie Brooks. Happily, his twin Donna (Christenson) Wrolstad lived to a ripe old age, before her death at 89 on October 23, 2007. Elmer and Maude's fourth child was Eldon Claire Christenson, who was born at Stewartsville on January 25, 1924.

When the 1930 census was taken, the Christensons rented a place for $40 a month on Forest Avenue at Kenyon, in Goodhue County, Minnesota. This was a 50-mile drive northwest of Stewartville. Elmer was hired there to manage the North Star Creamery Company, and he also served as Director of the Minnesota Creamery Operators and Managers Association.

The 1940 census finds the Christensons at 245 Red Wing Avenue in Kenyon. Elmer managed the creamery and worked 60 hours a week. In 1939, he had worked a total of 48 weeks – so there was time for vacation – and made $3,000. Maude did housework, and Claire attended school. Lois was 23 and single, and was employed as a stenographer at the bank. Donna had married in 1937 and was no longer in the household.

Elmer Christenson had a lengthy history of asthma and heart trouble. He died at Kenyon at age 61, on March 13, 1954. After his father's death, Claire assumed managerial responsibilities at the North Star Creamery before tendering his resignation, effective July 8, 1959. Maude survived her husband and eventually went to live with her daughter, Lois, and son-in-law, Elder Bennett Grose, at Austin in Mower County, Minnesota. She died there on July 9, 1974, a few weeks shy of her 82nd birthday.
