Hattiellen was born December 20, 1890, in Helena, the daughter of Nathan and Harriet Ellen (Talbott) Vestal. She grew up in Marysville. Her father was the developer of one of the richest mines in Marysville, the Penobscot Mine. She married W. Gerald Tuttle. Her husband was the vice-president of American Bosch Arma Corporation in New York City, where they lived for several years.
