American rapper. Founding member of the hip hop group Boogie Down Production (BDP) along with Lawrence Krisna "KRS-One" Parker and Derrick "D-Nice" Jones. The group formed in 1986 when Sterling, working as a social worker, met Parker while the latter was living in a homeless shelter. They released their first album, the gangsta rap themed "Criminal Minded" in March 1987.
On August 27, 1987, Streling, Derrick "D-Nice" Jones, and several others went to a South Bronx neighborhood to try to defuse a situation between some hoods who had assaulted D-Nice. However, as they were leaving, one of the hoods shot at the group, hitting Sterling in the neck. He was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries an hour later, becoming the first murder of the hip hop world. His death would have a profound effect on KRS-One, causing him to become a more socially conscious rapper.
