He moved to Hamburg in 1836, where he engaged in the cotton business. In 1849 he caught the gold fever and went to California, but returned to Augusta after about 18 months. He is survived by the following children: Mr. Berry Benson, Mrs. E.P.H. Ruland, Mrs. S.R. Rooks, Mr. B.K. Benson, Mrs. C.C. Carey and Clara Benson
