Mrs. W.E. Shelton, Sr., Dies at 106; Services Set For Tuesday

Mrs. Maud Key Shelton, who celebrated her 106th birthday last April 25, died Saturday in the Presbyterian Village Nursing Home in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Mrs. Shelton, widow of W.E. Shelton, Sr., had made her home in Mayfield and Graves County for her entire lifetime until 1971 when she entered the Arkansas nursing home.

She was born just north of Mayfield six years after the end of the Civil War. The homesite was a mile west of what is now the General Tire and Rubber Company plant.

The daughter of the late Henry Clay Key and Virginia Anderson Key, she became the bride of Mr. Shelton at the age of 19.

Mrs. Shelton had been a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mayfield since 1891. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution all of her adult life, and was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Mayfield. Mrs. Shelton is reported to be the oldest Auxiliary member in the world.

At the time of her one-hundredth birthday she was residing at a Paducah nursing home, and she was honored at a party by family and friends, with greetings received from then Gov. Louie B. Nunn, and President Nixon. Then State Senator Carroll Hubbard came to the party and presented Mrs. Shelton with a Kentucky Colonelcy.

The Sheltons were parents of seven children, of whom two survive, W.E. Shelton, Jr., of Mayfield, and Mrs. William P. Rock, Little Rock. Mrs. Shelton also leaves 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.
