Author. Known as "The Writer of Books," he gained that title by virtue of more than fifty published works. From the 1860s until his death, he wrote consistently on philosophy, art, music, history and psychology. He produced more intellectual books than any other Missouri author, but as he would not allow his works to be edited, most of them he published himself under the name "Sigma Publishing Company." For years he lived in poorer sections of St. Louis in order to have money to publish his books and to live as eccentrically as he chose. An expert linguist, he studied languages by rooming in a German house, visiting Germans beer garden, testing his Italian t sidewalk stands and taking his meals at French restaurants. He graduated from Oberlin, which later honored him with a degree of doctor of letters. He served for one year with the Union army, then came to St. Louis as a language instructor at Christian Brothers College. After two years, he became an instructor in a St. Louis high school. In 1866 he joined a group of philosophers under Henry Brokmeyer and William Torrey Harris and thus became a part of the "St. Louis Movement" from its beginning. From 1877 to 1879 he traveled throughout Europe, often on foot, conversing with the natives in their own language. On his return to St. Louis, he was greatly in demand as a lecturer and opened classes on the modern classical world. In 1880, on the invitation of William Harris, he began a series of lectures at the Concord, Massachusetts Philosophical School. Later he lectured on a lyceum course and then organized a "communal university" which met in various cities. In St. Louis it became the "Denton J. Snider Association for Universal Culture" and was responsible for bringing culture to the public with his enormous output of essays, poems, criticisms and philosophical commentaries.
