Waldo Advocate, Mo 8 Jan 1934: DR. MITCHELL DIES SUDDENLY Dr. J.C. Mitchell died suddenly in his home here Saturday evening about 5:30 o'clock from a heart attack. He had been suffering throughout the day from pains in his ches, but thought they were unimportant and decided that they would wear away. However, when he reached his home the pains became very severe, and finally became so unbearable that he was unable to lie down. It was then but a very short time until death came. He fell in the arms of his son Jack as he was walking through a door in the rear part of the store and died before he could be placed on a couch. Dr. Dreher of Luray made a hurried trip to Waldo to render aid only to learn that death had won, claiming its victim a few moments before. The tragic happening is a bitter blow to both the family and the entire comminity. Dr. Mitchell was a leader in this community both in his profession and in every other line that was of benefit to humanity. His kindly help and ministration, well remembered by all of us in hours of sickenss and sadness, will be missed. The entire community mourns with his family in the passing of our doctor. DEATHS John C. Mitchell, son of A.T. and Josephine Mitchell, was born at Schuyler, Nebr., May 18, 1874, and departed this life at Waldo, December 30, 1933, aged 59 years, seven months and 12 days. His parents moved to Kansas late in 1874 and he had been a resident ever since. His early life was spent in and near Morland, Kansas. Two brothers, Erwinof tulsa, Okla., and Frank of Greeley, Colo., survive. Three sisters, Florence, Helen and Eldora preceded him in death. He was graduated from Ensworth Medical College of Saint Joseph, Mo., in 1897 and began his practice in Waldo the same year where he has enjoyed the longest continuous practice in Russell county of any physician and during which time he owned and operated a drug store, the oldest business institution in Waldo. Dr. Mitchell was a good friend and neighbor and contributed generously of his services all the years he practiced. His council and advice had been a comfort to many. He was married to Etta Archer, February 2. 1913. To this union three children were born: John C., jr., Frank and Ruth, who, with their mother, survive. His passing is a severe loss to the Waldo community and his family. His contributions to the community with his services will long be remembered. The funeral was held at the M.E. church Monday afternoon, Jan. 1, 1934, at 2 o'clock. The pallbearers were: Dr. Dreher, Luray, Dr. Keorber, Russell; Dr. Cramm, Russell; Dr. Parker, Natoma; Dr. Smth, Lucas; and Dr. Higgins, Sylvan Grove.
