He was a Civil War veteran who initially served on the staff of General Philip Kearny. He next served in the 11th New York Calvary in June of 1862 and was promoted to the rank of Colonel for his actions during the battles of Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg. He was beset by illness until he had to resign from the army in the summer of 1864. He later received a brevet promotion to Brigadier General of the volunteers in 1865.
