Father Bryant was born in New Jersey. He went to Iowa, Oct, 1877, and six weeks before his death, to Texas. He became a member of the Presbyterian Church in Buchanan at its organization, and was for many years an officer in the Church. He was an active living Christian and looked up to as a father by all who knew him, and in his death the Church to which he belonged and the whole community feel that they have lost a good man and a good citizen."

His son John L. Bryant went on to California and died there about 13 Nov 1851. His death notice was carried in the Niles Republican on 18, Jan, 1851 and it reads: "Death of John L. Briant-Scarce had the news of the death of young Compton reached us, ere we are called upon to the list of the dead from this village in California. John L. Briant, son of Lewis Briant, than whom no more noble or enterprising spirit ever crossed the plains, fell a victim to the dysentary or cholres, on or about the 13th on November, aged 21 years last June. He had been in California near two years, and father and mother, brothers and sisters were daily expecting him home when the sad tidings of his death reached St. Joseph in a letter from Jas. B. Larue. Mr Larue writes that John L. Briant had watched over him during a severe illness and saved his life. In turn, Mr. Larue watched over and administered to John, but to no avail. Thus another family and numberous friends are called to mourn one of the brightest youths in the country. Truly California may be called the grave yard of America."
