George W. Reed was born at Erie, Pennsylvania on April 13, 1816. After finishing his schooling in Erie, he spent several years on the Great Lakes as captain of different vessels, and sailed the Atlantic between New York and Cuba. In 1840, he married Nancy Crawford Miller. They had two sons, George and Henry and three daughters, twins Effie (Mrs. George B. Foote) and Ella, and Alice (Mrs. Van H. Fisk). The family arrived in Virginia City in September 1864. A year later, the family moved to Helena, and George engaged in mining and later ranching on Ten Mile. On June 17, 1903, at age 87, George died at St. John's Hospital from chronic heart disease. (Helena Independent, 6/18/1903) His attending physician was Horsky. On June 19, H. J. Reed purchased the following from Herrmann & Co: draped broadcloth casket and outside box $100.00, partial embalming and attendance $20.00, moving remains from hospital and to residence $5.00, vest $2.50, shirt and collar $1.15, suit underwear and stockings $1.50, six pair gloves and arm crepe $1.50, opening and closing grave by Sam Bennett $6.00, engraving of nameplate $2.00, total $139.65. The funeral was held from the family home at 510 Hollins Avenue. He has a tombstone and a footstone inscribed "GWR." Section B, Row 5.
