Child Dies from Burns
Leila Helen Botkin, 6-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Botkin, died Wednesday night in the Newman memorial hospital from burns received Wednesday afternoon. The little girl was playing with her brother, Francis, in the yard of the Botkin home, 24 Walnut, when a match dropped by a man passing the yard ignited dead grass outside the fence. The fire spread to the inside of the fence, catching dead leaves the children had been raking. The boy and girl attempted to put out the blaze with sacks, but the sack Leila was using set fire to her dress and before help arrived the child was badly burned. A physician was called and the girl was taken to the Newman hospital. She died at 10 o'clock. Leila Helen Botkin was born April 5, 1917 in Arvonia. Two years ago she came with her parents to Emporia. She is survived by her parents, one sister, Laura, and two brothers, Walter and Francis. She was a pupil at the Maynard school.
