John enlisted on May 6, 1944, and served with the United States Navy as a Fireman 2nd Class aboard the U.S.S. Monaghan (DD 324). The Monaghan capsized and sank during Typhoon Cobra; only 6 of 263 crew members survived. John's body was not recovered.
