Police call Sillitoe death a suicide

J. Clarence "Shorty" Sillitoe, 67, of 12 Locust St., died at his Helper home Thursday night.

Sillitoe was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m. after the county attorney, a sheriff's deputy and the Helper police were summoned to the scene of the suicide.

Police said Sillitoe might have been despondent as a result of a lengthy illness.

Born Dec. 13, 1907 in Clear Creek to John and Victoria White Sillitoe, he married Leila Nay Dec. 7, 1929, in Price. Sillitoe was a member of the LDS Church, a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA Local 1681, Castle Gate.

Surviving him are his wife; three sons of Helper, Cedar City and Henderson, Nev.; a daughter of Helper; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Ernest, Ogden, and two sisters, Mrs. Ila Rice, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Dick (Ruth) Rogers, Helper.

Funeral services were held Monday at 1 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, Price. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery, Helper.

The family suggests contributions to the respiratory department of Carbon Hospital.
