John W. Spearance, 88, of Sandy Creek passed away June 13, 2012 at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown. Born July 31, 1923 in Potsdam, N.Y. son of the late William John & Mable Minnie Sackett Spearance. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1947. Married to the former Leola "Lee" Bettinger on September 20, 1947. His wife died in 1993. He retired in 1986 as a construction worker with the Central New York Laborers Union in East Syracuse. Then he worked for the Village of Sandy Creek & the Sandy Creek/Lacona Waterworks Dept. until the age of 83. He lived at Renshaw Bay, Mannsville, N.Y. from 1956-1975. Moved to Sandy Creek in 1975. John was a member & past commander of Cable Trail V.F.W. Post #8534 in Lacona.
Surviving are 3 sons: Richard C. & Jacoba of Orwell, William J. & Sharon of Adams Center, & Thomas G. & companion Bob McElligott of Rochester. 2 daughters: Vickie L. & Charles Fenn of Sandy Creek, Edie M. Waugh & companion Shawn White of Sandy Creek. 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 3 sisters: Genevive Killenbeck of Pierrepont Manor, Dorthy Nirst of New Hampshire, Mable Ryan of LaFargeville, 1 brother: Donald of Altmar. Besides his wife Lee he was predeceased by an infant daughter Linda in 1951, 4 brothers & 2 sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 1 P.M. Summerville Home in Sandy Creek. Rev. Wayne Grow offciating. Burial in Ellisburg Cemetery. Calling hours Saturday 11-1 P.M. at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Cable Trail V.F.W. Pot #8534 in Lacona or Sandy Creek Fire Dept. Rescue.
