Connie Jo Leonard, 68, Bellwood, formerly of Altoona, passed away Tuesday at Altoona Regional after bravely fighting numerous illnesses.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Joseph and Catharine (Hughes) Brubaker. She married her soul mate, Kenneth Leonard Sr., on Sept. 11, 1959, and they began their love affair of almost 53 years.

Surviving are her husband; four children: Kenneth Charles Jr. (Tracy) of Roaring Spring and Melanie Rose Mallery (Dave), Susan Jo Conaway-Miller (Bob) and Randy Dale (Cindy), all of Altoona; 12 grandchildren: Kenneth Leonard III (Nicole) in South Carolina, Kellen Leonard in North Carolina, Heather Mallery (Jonah), Amy Coombs (Tommy), Davey Mallery (Katy) and Jessica Mallery, all of Altoona, Cameron Conaway II (Maggie) in Thailand, Courtney Conaway of Hollidaysburg and Holly Stover (Scott), Taylor, Randi and Alexis Leonard, all of Altoona; five great-grandchildren: Anah Beschler, Braylen and Adalynn Coombs, all of Altoona, Trinity Leonard in North Carolina and Harper Mallery arriving in August; three stepgrandchildren: Bobby, Justin and Jessica Miller; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren: Branden, Manny, Owen, Tiara and Ava Miller and Noah and Lucas Leonard.

She is also survived by a brother, Joseph Brubaker Jr.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister and close friend, Marjorie "Sis" Becker.

Connie loved being a housewife and dearly loved her family. She enjoyed bingo, her computer and Facebook. She passed peacefully surrounded by her husband, "Honey," and many of her loved ones. She left the following poem to help ease the grief, "To Those I Love and Those Who Loved Me," author unknown:

"When I am gone, release me, let me go. I have so many things to see and do. You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears. Be happy that we had so many years. I gave to you my love. You can only guess how much you gave to me in happiness. I thank you for the love you each have shown, but now it's time I traveled on alone. So grieve a while for me if grieve you must, then let your grief be comforted by trust. It's only for a while that we must part, so bless the memories within your heart. I won't be far away, for life goes on. So if you need me, call, and I will come. Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near, and if you listen with your heart, you'll hear all of my love around you soft and clear. And then when you must come this way alone, I'll greet you with a smile and say, 'Welcome Home.'"

To respect Connie's wishes, she will be cremated, and there will be no public viewing. A family celebration of Connie's life will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a charity that was very dear to Connie's heart.
