Former British soldier. The De Berniere and Jones family first came to Philadelphia. Prior to leaving England he was appointed by the British Government governor of Canada. He refused the assignment and left for America. Both Jones and De Berniere left Philadelphia and settled in Wilmington, North Carolina then Chatham County. John next settled with his family on Deep River near Rockrest, but shortly afterwards the house burned and De Berniere removed with his family to Charleston, South Carolina where he died in 1812. His sons died young, and all his daughter's remained in Charleston with the exception of his daughter Charlotte who married in 1806 Archibald Maclaine Hooper of Wilmington, NC. It is thought that the De Berniere family arrived in Charleston about 1800. He was a Lieutenant Colonel of his Britannic Majesty's 60th regiment of foot and the 18th regiment of foot. One of his daughters married in Fayetteville, Mr. Robert Lane on July 13, 1799. Catherine married Robert Pepes Ormsby, and she died in 1805. Another daughter Charlotte, married Henry Wray of the Bengal establishment and the eldest daughter was Louise.
