"Walter J. Stafford, a prominent merchant here since 1932 and founder of the Butternut Valley Baseball league, died Wednesday morning of last week at 10 o'clock in the Fox Memorial Hospital at Oneonta, where he had been a medical patient since January 21st. Apparently recovering from lobar pneumonia, Mr. Stafford suffered a relapse and died before his family could reach the hospital ... He was born November 28, 1883, in Chicago, Ill., a son of Abner and Mary Stafford. When a young child his father died and he and his mother moved to Cortland, where he resided several years. His marriage to Miss Alice Matteson, daughter of Mrs. Merrick Matteson and the late Dr. Matteson, well known Morris physician, occurred January 19, 1905. They resided in Flushing, L. I., and Arlington, N. J., before moving to this village ... Surviving are his wife; two sons, Richard and Robert Stafford, both Morris businessmen; and two grandchildren, Richard and Virginia Stafford, to all of whom sincere sympathy will be extended. Funeral services were held from the family home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. H. E. Danielson, pastor of the Morris Baptist church, officiated. The body was placed in the Hillington cemetery vault. [The Otsego Farmer & Republican (Cooperstown, NY), Fri., Feb. 24, 1939, Page Six]
