Martha Sterndale was born April 1, 1719 in Stanton, Derbyshire, England. Her parents are Joshua and Ann Smedley Sterndale of Stanton in Peaks and Youlgreave. She had an older sister Ann born July 12, 1712, and a younger brother Richard born June 19, 1722. All were born in Stanton, Derbyshire, England.

At the age of 24, Martha married Francis Carson of Youlgreave May 4, 1743. The couple were blessed with seven children as folows:

William born August 5, 1744; Elin born December 28, 1746; Helen born January 25, 1748-49; Charles born March 31, 1754; Ann born February 23, 1757; Martha born December 28, 1759; and Humphrey born June 14, 1761. All were born in Youlgreave. Her son Charles married Alice Eley (or Eyley) March 31, 1777 in Youlgreave Church, a wedding Martha was not to witness.

Martha passed away February 21, 1773 leaving her husband Francis with care of the children. Cause of death is unknown, but 52 is a young age to die. I'm sure she was sorely missed by her husband and children. Her husband later married Martha Tissington July 22, 1776.

Martha was buried in Youlgreave All Saints Cemetery where her gravestone reads "Martha Carson died Feb. 21, 1773 aged 52 years".
