Joseph P. Runyan, married Unicy R. Quinn February 19, 1861 in Cleveland County, NC. Joseph enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 5, 1862. Private Runyan was in Company G, 49th Regiment, North Carolina Volunteers, "The Kings Mountain Tigers". He was captured on April 1, 1865 at Five Forks, Virginia and was imprisoned at Point Lookout, Maryland. Private Runyan died on June 22, 1865 of "intermittent fever" as a POW in Point Lookout Confederate Prison in Maryland. Joseph is buried in the mass grave that is now the Confederate Prisoner of War Cemetery.

It is an interesting fact that Private Runyan was captured just eight days before Lee's surrender at Appomattox and that he died a few weeks after prisoner releases had started to occur at Point Lookout.
