Courtney Elaine Longbotham
A beautiful celebration of life in loving memory of Courtney Elaine Longbotham, age 27, of Waco was held on Wednesday, September 29, in the First United Methodist Church of Groesbeck.
Courtney, a lifelong resident of Groesbeck and beloved member of this community, passed away on Sunday, September 26, as a result of a traffic accident in Austin. She was the daughter of Colleen and Jim Longbotham of Groesbeck.
Courtney was born on December 16, 1982, in Waco. She graduated from Groesbeck High School in 2001. She was one of the most popular students at GHS. During her high school years, she received many honors. She was class president, head cheerleader, Miss GHS, prom queen, most involved student, class favorite, student council vice-president, yearbook editor, and was selected by the GHS faculty as the Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce Youth Citizen of the Year during her senior year.
Courtney was also an accomplished tennis player, and one her greatest joys was playing tennis for her Daddy who has been the GHS tennis coach for many years. Courtney was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Groesbeck.
Courtney's chosen career was that of a hair stylist. A talented and well known hair stylist in the Waco area, Courtney had been on the staff of the Cutting Edge Salon in Waco for six years. She was en route to a hair styling seminar with her co-workers at the time of her death.
Courtney was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Pauline Dennis, and by her paternal grandmother, Betty Louise Longbotham. Courtney may also be remembered by many in the area as the great-granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wooton of Mexia and Mr. and Mrs. T. Elmo Longbotham of Groesbeck
In addition to her parents, Colleen and Jim, Courtney is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Lauren and Tod Meisner of Dallas; her sister, Megan Longbotham of Plano; maternal grandfather, Howard Dennis of Farmers Branch, paternal grandparents, Martha and Tom Longbotham of Groesbeck; and her fiancé, Jason O'Neal of Waco.
She is also survived by the following aunts and uncles, Ken and Kathleen Vines of Plano; Mike and Melissa Arney of Groesbeck; Cliff and Sherry Rampy of Tomball; and Alys Longbotham of Austin. She is also survived by numerous cousins and a host of friends.
As stated previously, the funeral service was a beautiful celebration of Courtney's life. The overflow attendance at the service was a testimony to the love and high regard everyone had for this young lady. The sanctuary of the church was packed as was the fellowship hall and over 200 chairs had been placed on the church lawn with these chairs being filled with many standing for the service.
The visitation was held on Tuesday night, September 28, at the Groesbeck Funeral Home with an estimated attendance of between 500 and 600 people. Again, a testimony of the tremendous love for Courtney from her friends.
Rev. Steve Nance, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Groesbeck, officiated at the service.
Megan Longbotham, sister of Courtney, sang a beautiful, inspiring and stirring rendition of "His Eye Is On the Sparrow" with the congregation joining in the singing of the last two stanzas.
Following the obituary by Rev. Nance, special remarks were given by friends and family members. These speakers were Jaclyn Garrett, on behalf of the GHS Class of 2001; Ken Vines, uncle of Courtney; Dr. Butch Luce, former Groesbeck High School principal; and Lauren Longbotham Meisner, sister of Courtney.
Each of these speakers remembered Courtney in their own special way. However, each of them described Courtney as a friendly person who always greeted everyone with a big smile. Courtney was also noted for her leadership abilities and was considered a great peacemaker. A high school cheerleader, Courtney was described by some of these speakers as a cheerleader to her friends as she always encouraged them in their various endeavors.
In his message Rev. Nance also noted the many outstanding qualities and traits of Courtney which had been given by the above speakers.
Amanda Garcia sang "Mercy Me" , and she concluded the service singing "Amazing Grace". Jo Ann Stone was the organist for the service.
The program for the service included a beautiful letter to Courtney from her fiancé, Jason O'Neal. The letter expressed his love, devotion and respect for Courtney.
Pallbearers were Truman Arney, Blake Rampy, Jeff Vines, Bradley Harryman, Kyle Logan, Bobby Lewis, John Marc Curry, and Pedro Rodriguez.
The sanctuary of the church was graced with a large and beautiful floral offering. Situated with the beautiful flowers was the lovely wedding gown which Courtney would have worn in her marriage to Jason on January 1, 2011.
Following interment at Faulkenberry Cemetery, the family received visitors at the Methodist Activity Center.
