Evelyn Kimbrell Koontz, 88, of N.C. Highway 150 South, died Thursday, July 5, 2007, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, where she was a member, by the Rev. Dr. David Nelson. Interment will follow in Sandy Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. Koontz was born in York County, S.C., on Sept. 17, 1918, to Thomas Kimbrell and Mamie Hayes Kimbrell. She retired from the Davidson County school system after 22 years of service. She was a member of the Ladies Circle and the church choir and served her church in many other capacities. Mrs. Koontz was a former charter member of the Tyro Volunteer Fire Department Women's Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Thomas Kimbrell Jr.; and one sister, Jeanette Beck.

Surviving are her loving husband, Elbert "Luke" Koontz of the home; two daughters, Lynda E. Burrage of Rockwell and Theresa K. Bruening and her husband, Bob, of Heathrow, Fla.; one sister, Geneva Yarbrough of Lexington; three grandchildren, Richard Smith and his wife, Vickie, Teddy Burrage and Shane Burrage and his wife, Tracy; and four great-grandchildren, Allen Smith, Daniel Smith, Matthew Burrage and Brandon Burrage.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service Saturday in Vanderford Hall at St. Luke's Lutheran Church.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Sandy Creek Cemetery Fund, c/o Terry Shoaf, 2268 Tyro Road, Lexington, NC 27295.
