Sherry Rebecca Hester, 56, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2012.
Sherry was born in Harrisonburg on Aug. 22, 1955. She graduated from Turner Ashby High School in 1973 and was awarded a B.S. in nursing with honors from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing and the University of Maryland in 1977.
Sherry served in the U.S. Army, Nurse Corps, from 1973 to 1981 attaining the rank of captain. She was a member of the American Legion, Dayton, Va., Post 27.
Sherry married Dr. Thomas W. Hester on Oct. 3, 1981. They lived in Louisiana, Georgia and Hawaii before returning to rejoin family and friends in Harrisonburg and her beloved Shenandoah Valley in 2008.
Sherry received a master's in nursing from the Georgia Health Sciences University in 1986. Throughout her nursing career, she touched many patients and families while working as a critical care staff nurse, nurse educator, clinical administrator and advanced practice psychiatric clinical nurse specialist. She was a member of the nursing honor society, Sigma Theta Tau.
Sherry was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where she found enormous personal and professional joy serving as the parish nurse.
Sherry was preceded in death by her infant sister, Lisa Laraye Hogshead.
She is survived by her husband and best friend, Tom, her beloved parents, Jean (Morris) and Richard Hogshead, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and friends.
A memorial service at Trinity Presbyterian Church will be held on Saturday, June 16, at 11 a.m. At 3 p.m. on Saturday, all are invited to attend a graveside ceremony with military honors at Mossy Creek Church.
Arrangements are being handled by the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
