Sarah was the oldest of six children of Daniel and Sarah (Ilgenfritz) Hake. Her mother died when she was young and her father married Mary McConnel and had four more children.

Sarah was the second wife of Sylvester Brewer. He was the son of Peter and Hannah (Sanborn) Brewer and his first wife was Elizabeth Armstrong. They had four children.

Sarah and Sylvester were married on May 6, 1840 in Trumbull County, Ohio. They moved to Jefferson, Wisconsin in 1845 and in the 1850 census they were living next door to Sarah's uncle Phillip and aunt Sally (Schneider) Hake.

Sylvester and Sarah had eight children:
