Killed in the line of duty

Cst. Bill Shelever had only been out of recruit class six weeks when he was shot on May 24, 1977. On that evening, the 31-year-old rookie and his partner, Cst. Pedersen, spotted a man who fit the description of an armed robbery suspect. They took him to their car for questioning.

Without warning, the suspect pulled a gun and demanded the officers' weapons. While attempting to disarm him, Cst. Shelever took a shot in the head while Cst. Pederson was shot in the leg and foot. Cst. Pederson was able to shoot and wound the assailant as he tried to escape. Cst. Shelever passed away two days later in hospital with his wife at his side. The shooter was later convicted of attempted murder and murder.

Bill Shelever immigrated to Canada from Triest in Yugoslavia as a young boy with his parents. The family settled in Calgary, where Bill was raised. When Bill was in high school he worked for Canadian Pacific Railroad. Then after graduation, he became a welder and worked for Barber Industries before fulfilling his dream of becoming a police officer. Bill had a love for children, animals, drag racing and football.

Cst. Shelever was survived by his wife Janet and a daughter, Billie, who was born a few months after his death. He also left behind his parents Andriy and Olena (Helen), extended family and many friends.
