In the 1900 Caldwell County Census, James is listed as the husband of Mary Ann Luwellyn. A daughter, Netta(should be Metta) and a grandson, Samuel, are also listed in the household. According to a document called the "Sharp Llewellen Family Record", they had 16 children. Children for whom sources can be found include: Joseph Henry(married Martha Link), James Thomas (married Nancy M. Greer), Martha Jane (married William M. Coffey), Partee Cornelius (married Etta Miller), and Louisa (married Andrew Sullivan).

James A Sharp & Mary Ann "Luallen" were married 24th of April 1845 in Rockingham Co., N. C. From there they moved to Wilkes County, N.C.

James Sharpe served in the Civil War. Official records have James A. Sharp, from Wilkes Co., N.C., enlisted in Co. B, 55th North Carolina Infantry as a private on April 5, 1863 at the age of 32.

He was injured and hospitalized on June 4, 1863 at Richmond, Virginia and to duty returned on June 23, 1863. He became a prisoner of war on July 14, 1863 at Falling Waters, Maryland. On July 16, 1863, he was confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC. James was transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland on August 8, 1863, paroled on March 3, 1864 at Point Lookout, Maryland and exchanged on 06 March 1864 at City Point, Virginia. He once again became a POW on March 31, 1865 at Hatcher's Run, Virginia. and was once again confined at Point Lookout, MD on April 2, 1865. He took the Oath of Allegiance on June 20, 1865 at Point Lookout.

His middle name is written as Archer, but he may have been called "Archie" as more than one descendant is named "James Archie".
