area which is now Cherokee County, near Braggs. There is
no birth certificate. He is the youngest of three children
born of Berry Carter and we think his mother was Elizabeth Thompson, though this is not proven. He is Native American
and was thought to be Cherokee; however, it looks more like
he was Catawba. His siblings are Martha Ann and Manuel
Henry born 1882 and 1884 respectively. Martha Ann and
Manuel are thought to have been born in the Boston Mtns of
Arkansas. He married Mary Ann James in 1913 with whom he
had four children: Frederick in 1914, Manford in 1916,
Mildred in 1918 and Archie in 1920. He never lived to see
Archie because he died in Jan of 1920 and Archie wasn't
born until July 1920. His grave was finally located in
2002 and a monument erected.
