Herschel Evans was born on January 11, 1920, in Weatherford, Oklahoma, to Margaret Lorena (Rene) Pigg Evans and Virgil (Bert) Kermit Evans, early Oklahoma pioneers. His siblings were Hazel Celeste Evans (1901-1990); Gladys May Evans (1903-1996) who married Dorcy Fullbright; Kermit Virgil Evans (1905-1971) who married Evelyn Lucille Rutherford Witcher; Ruth Christena Evans (1910-1930); and Opal Inez Evans(1917-1971) who married Gerald ‘Jerry’ Fiegener
Herschel attended Southwestern Oklahoma State College in Weatherford and after serving in the military in WW II he graduated from the University of Oklahoma, where he majored in Engineering.
On December 25, 1941, Herschel married his childhood sweetheart, the girl he met in kindergarten in Weatherford, Willie Ruth Austin. They were married for 38 years when he passed away at the age of 58.
Herschel served in the Army Air Corps during WWII from 1943-1946. He attended Officers Training in Boca Raton, Florida, followed by engineering technical training in the Air Forces Technical Detachment at Yale University, additionally training in Buffalo, N.Y., and Biloxi, Ms. He deployed to Brazil and attained the rank of Captain during his service with the Air Corps.
Herschel and Ruth raised three girls, Hersha, Nancy, and Shelley, during their many moves to several western and midwestern states for Herschel’s lifelong career as an engineer for Stanolind Oil Company through its various iterations including Service Pipeline, Amoco, and later BP. They lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Evergreen, Colorado; Scottsbluff, Nebraska; North Dakota; Topeka, Kansas; Williston, North Dakota, Casper, Wyoming, Tulsa, Oklahoma again; Raytown, Missouri; St. Charles, Missouri, and Raytown, Missouri again.
Herschel loved family gatherings and enjoyed fishing, reading about and exploring national parks and historical sites and events, traveling, listening to record albums, explaining the intricate details of ‘how things worked’ to his daughters and Grandson Shannon and son-in-law Sheldon, playing with the family dogs Duke and later Maybe, and using his ever-present slide rule. He loved nature and attending Audubon movies around town with his girls.
He died on January 2, 1979, in Raytown, Missouri, at the age of 58, and was buried in Kansas City, Missouri.
He will always be missed.
