Doctor John Lemoyne Porter was born one of five children to Thomas Livingston and Fannie Lillian (McCutchan) Porter on 30 October 1903 at Alma, Nebraska. He departed this life Tuesday, 23 December 1980 while visiting a niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Lillard, at Apache Junction, Arizona. His age was 77 years, two months and 20 days.
Lemoyne grew up in Alma, graduating with the class of 1921. Later he attended Princeton University, graduating in 1926 with a bachelor of science degree in chemisty. He then attended Stanford University where he received his doctorate degree in chemistry.
He worked in Jackson, Wyoming in 1926 and 1927 for the Jackson Drug Company. After receiving his doctorate, he became employed by the Dole Pineapple Company in San Francisco, California. During World War II he was loaned as a research chemist to General Foods of Chicago where he worked from 1941 to 1945. He became employed by Kaiser Aluminum in Oakland, California in 1945. Lemoyne has resided in Palo Alto, California since 1953 where he was a member of the Palo Alto Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America as a youth in Alma. This interest in the out-of-doors continued throughout his life. In that time he enjoyed hunting, a cabin in the mountains and was an avid golfer. He had gone to Phoenix to visit his family and to play golf over the holidays when he was suddenly stricken ill and passed away.
Those preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Guy Livingston Porter in 1955 and Robert Bruce Porter in 1961.
He leaves to mourn his passing two sisters, Miss Lucile Porter and Mrs. Helen (Porter) Van Spronssen, both of Alma: several nieces and nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.
