Joe was a great kid. He had a train set that would make your eyes water. It was beautiful and as a girl cousin I was not allowed to play with it but that did not make it any less wonderful. Joe was a "ham" operator. Some days you would go down to his room and he would be "talking" via dits and dots to people all over the world. He had an old car that he was fixing up.

It was the summer of 1962, Joe was going to college in a few weeks time to study to be an electrical engineer. One day his friends said let's go to the lake for a swim. Joe was not a good swimmer, but it was his buddies and it was the end of summer so he said yes. Joe drowned that day a few feet from shore in water barely over his head. His buddies tried to help him but they had to let go because he was so frighten he was pulling them under too.

I often think of Joe and wonder what type of husband and father he would have made. I know his mother missed him every day of her life.
