MRS SARAH L PECK
Brief announcement was made in yesterday’s Gazette of the death of Mrs Sarah L Peck, which occurred peacefully at her home in Scranton yesterday, after a brief illness. Mrs Peck was the widow of Rev George M Peck and was born at Pompey, Onondaga county NY April 24, 1819, being therefore in her 84th year. Mrs Peck’s grandfather, Jesse Butler, was one of the pioneer settlers of Pompey emigrating there from Connecticut in 1786. Her parents Merit and Sabina Butler married in 1813. Both parents and grandparents lived to be over 90 years of age. The schools of her childhood home were supplemented for her education by a course in Cazenovia Seminary, an institution still noted for its wide culture and deeply religious influence.

It was while pursuing her studies there that she was wooed and won by George M Peck whose father Rev George Peck D D was president of the seminary at that time. Married in July, 1839, their wedding tour was a carriage drive to Forty Fort, Luzerne county, where they settled on a farm owned by Dr Peck at the foot of the mountain. They continued for a time at farming, until, during a religious revival conducted by Rev William Reddy, George M Peck set his face toward the ministry. Mrs Peck was converted at this revival and obtained the inspiration which was to aid her in assisting in her husband’s life work. During this same revival, Jonathan K Peck, a cousin of George M Peck, and father of Druggist J L Peck, was converted and entered the ministry. Both the subject of this sketch and her husband were well known in Pittston where they resided during two pastorates at the Broad street Methodist Episcopal church. George M Peck died two years after preaching his semi-centenary sermon, and now, having survived him by five years, Mrs Peck follows him to an eternal home. She is survived by one brother and sister, Wells Butler, for a long time postmaster at Pompey, and Mrs Ellen Butler Baird, also of Pompey; and two sons, Luther W and William H Peck, both well known business men of Scranton. She was the grandmother of the editor of the Gazette. The funeral will be held at her late home 929 Delaware street, Scranton Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Several members of Wyoming conference will speak briefly, among them Presiding Elder A Griffin, Rev A F Chaffee, Rev M D Fuller and Rev G A Cure her pastor. Singing from the Methodist hymnal will be led by Rev J C Leacock and Rev J B Sumner, survivors of the conference trio. Interment in Dunmore cemetery.
