US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served New York's 5th District from 1971 to 1973 and 4th District from 1973 to 1993 in the United States House of Representatives. He attained his BA from Hofstra College (later Hofstra University) and following his two-years of service with the US Navy during the Korean War, he received his law degree from Cornell University in 1957. He launched his political career when he was elected to and served in the New York State Senate (1962 to 1970). During his tenure in Congress, Lent chaired the House Energy and Commerce Committee and sponsored the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. After leaving office, he established his own government relations firm in Washington, DC. He died following a battle with cancer.
