Peter Hillegonds was born in December 1890 in Cook County, Illinois, very probably in the Dutch truck farmers settlement of Roseland, since 1892 a southern district of Chicago.

His mother Guurtje Eriks died in March 1895 at the age of 38 years, very probably in Chicago. His Dutch father Jacob Hillegonds remarried on 25 November 1896, very likely in Chicago, the 12 years younger Christiana Van Driel, since April 1894 widow of Andries (Andrew) Brink. In March 1898 Jacob and Christina Hillegonds had in Chicago son Jacob Hillegonds, thus a half-brother of Peter.

In June 1900 Peter Hillegonds (9 y, born in December 1890 in Illinois), his father Jacob Hillegonds (46, Aug 1853, Holland, labor foreman), his stepmother Christiana (34, June 1865, Holland), his (step)siblings Gertie Hillegonds (20, November 1879, Holland, servant), Arie (19, April 1881, Holland, iron roller), Annie (16, May 1884, Illinois), John (11, June 1889, Illinois), Leendert [Blink] (9, August 1890, Illinois), Gerrit (8, May 1892, Illinois), Henry [Blink] (7, May 1893, Illinois), Andrew [Blink] (5, September 1894, Illinois) and his half-brother Jacob [Jr] (2, March 1898) were living in an own home at Wabash Avenue in Hyde Park Township, Ward 34 of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In 1910 Peter Hillegonds didn't live anymore at his parental home, which was then in the town or township of St. John, about seven miles south of Munster and Highland, Lake County, in the utter northwestern part of Indiana.

Peter Hillegonds married on 8 April 1914 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 23 years to the four years younger Cleatus Gaither.

On 3 June 1918 Peter Hillegonds, laborer for RR [= RailRoad] Steel Co in Chicago, was residing with his wife and two children at the town of Dyer [St. John's Township, south of Chicago, Lake County], Indiana, when he was administrated on a World War I Draft Registration Card.

In 1920 Peter Hillegonds (29, Illinois), his wife Clevis (26, Indiana), their sons Edgar (9, Indiana) and Geo (5, Indiana) lived at a rented home in the village of Lansing, nowadays a southern suburb of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In 1930 Peter Hillegond (40), his wife Clarlees (36), their children Edgar (19), George (15), Donald (?, Illinois), Gertrude (5, Illinois) and John (2, Illinois) lived (still) in Lansing, Cook county, Illinois.

In April 1940 Peter Hillegonds (48, railroad trucker), his wife Cleatus (46), their children Donald (20, Illinois, truck driver for retail groceries), Gertrude (15, Illinois), John (12, Illinois) and James (9, Illinois) lived at an own home, worth $4200, in -still- Lansing, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois. They lived in 1935 at the same house.

In 1942 Peter Hillegonds was living at Wentworth Avenue in Lansing and working for Mr. L.M. Smith at Indiana Harbor Belt [Railroad] [Yard at Hammond] in Lake County, Indiana, when he was administrated on a World War II Draft Registration Card.

His wife Cleatus died in April 1976 at the age of 81 years, probably at her last residence place, Cedar Lake in Lake County, Indiana. Peter Hillegonds died in March 1978 in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 87 years.

Peter Hillegonds, age 87 of Lansing, Ill., passed away Saturday, March 18, 1978 at the Rest Haven Christian Convalescent Home in South Holland, Ill. Survivors: five sons, Charles E. (Jaceba) Hillegonds of Lansing, Ill., George (Viva) Hillegonds of Deer River, Minnesota, Donald (Bea) Hillegonds of Kankakee, Ill., John (Everdean) Hillegonds and James (Mickey) Hillegonds, both of Lansing; one daughter, Gertrude (John) Swets of Cedar Lake; twenty-four grandchildren; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; four step-granddaughters; one brother, Gerrit (Verna) Hillegonds of Oak Park, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Kate Flym of Lansing. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 21, 1 p.m. at the Oak Glen Christian Reformed Church in Lansing with the Rev. Arthur Verberg officiating. Burial, Oakridge Cemetery, Lansing. Friends may call at the Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Rd., Lansing, Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 10 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Oak Glen Christian Reformed Church Radio Ministry would be accepted. Mr. Hillegonds was a lifelong resident of the Calumet area. He was member of the Oak Glen Christian Reformed Church and a retired employee of the New York Central Railroad "I.H.B."
