Wiley was the son of Caro Cleveland and Catherine DeHart Burchfield of Bryson City. Twin brother to Wade Juel Birchfield, Wiley was an avid musician. He played with the likes of the Osborne Brothers, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and countless numbers of others from the Grand Ole Opry. His instrument of choice was the banjo, however, he could play anything. Along with his brother Wade who played the guitar, and my dad Marvin who played the fiddle, they were some of the first and finest musicians in the western mountains of North Carolina to bring bluegrass music to their community.
There are all gone now, but they will never be forgotten - Glen, Carl, Sam, Milburn, Horace, Telitha, Frank, Marvin, Wade, Wiley, and Carroll. What a great family!
