Thomas E. Gahan, founder of a noted Port Washington construction firm, died Monday, Apr. 30 at St. Alphonsus hospital where he had been a patient for the past week. He was 83.
Mr. Gahan came to Port Washington in 1927 with his wife and children and established Gahan Construction Co.. The firm built many of the well known structures in and around the city, including the city hall, the Ozaukee county jail, and the Port Washington swimming pool. His firm also built Smith Bros. present restaurant, many industrial plants, several churches and three of the schools and scores of homes.
Mr. Gahan retired in 1955 and his son Earl took over the firm. Earl died in 1967.
Mr. Gahan was born in Tomahawk, Wis. Dec. 26, 1889, son of Thomas A. and Catherine Connell Gahan. He married Annabelle McDonald in 1913. She died in 1947. In 1950 he married Pearl Anderson of Chicago, who survives him.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Gahan is survived by two sons, Richard and Thomas of Port Washington; three daughters, Katherine (Mrs. Fred) Schwenker, AnnaRuth (Mrs. Charles) Schaefer, and Doris (Mrs. Henry) Kolbach, all of Port Washington; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Rosemary Gahan of Port Washington; a stepson Charles Anderson of Chicago; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Schuler of Duluth, Minn.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 3, at St. Mary Catholic church, the Rev. Rolland T. Glass officiating, and burial will be in St. Mary cemetery.
Friends may call at Horn Funeral Home in Port Washington after 4 p.m. Wednesday and there will be a parish vigil at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
