Richard served as a 1st Lt., Company C, 84th Chemical Mortar Battalion, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

Richard was "Killed In Action" when a large caliber enemy shell fell into the forward supply point of the unit, slightly south of Loiano, Italy during the war. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
