In 1920, Mary and John were residents of Hastings in Barry County, Michigan, where John was a yardman for a bookcase factory. Their children were no longer living at home. The 1926 Hastings City Directory listed John as a laborer. By 1927 John was not employed and he and Mary were residing in Grand Rapids.
In 1930, Mary, a widow, was living with her daughter, Jessie, and grandchildren, John, Race, Enid, and Robert. The Census for that year stated Jessie was married and "head of the household", however a husband was not mentioned. No one in the home was employed.
In February of 1934 Mary died while visiting her son, Antony, in Buffalo, New York. Her remains were returned to Michigan to be interred next to her late husband. Although Mary's grave marker give her birth year as 1870, several other records indicate she was born in March of 1866.
