Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Pine Grove Methodist church for James R. Stewart, 61, who died here Tuesday afternoon.

The Rev. L.A. Carrington and the Rev. George Cagle officiated at the rites. Burial was in the Pine Grove cemetery under direction of the Green-Kleinegger Funeral home.

Mr. Stewart, who was life long resident of Minden, was an active farmer and was also employed by the Agriculture Conservation Program here.

In addition to serving as secretary-treasurer of the Dorcheat Soil Conservation District Board of Supervisors since its formation in 1939, Mr. Stewart took an active interest in the Louisiana Soil Conservation District Supervisors' Association and the National Association of Soil Conservation Districts. He attended all the state and national conventions and served on a number of committees.

During the past 17 years, Mr. Stewart gave much of his time, effort and counsel to guiding and promoting the work of the Soil Conservation District, and his work has contributed much to soil rehabilitation in this area.

Mr. Stewart himself was a good conservation farmer. Some of the first conservation practices in the district were established on his farm.

He is survived by his widow; five daughters, Mrs. James Young of Doyline; Mrs. Bill Fox, Mrs. Marcus Wren, Mrs. Jerry Dunn and Miss Nancy Stewart, all of Minden; two brothers, Graham Stewart of Minden and David Stewart of Ringgold; two sisters, Mrs. J.G. Pope and Mrs. Lawson Davis, both of Minden; and seven grandchildren.
